In SAP,
"Migration" is the process of transferring data or applications from one existing SAP system to another, one platform to another, or one data source to another. Generally, it happens during data or application integration, upgrade or migration projects.
Migration processes can be in the following ways,
❑ Data Migration: Transferring data from old to new systems. This data can be customer information, inventory, financial data, or different types of data.
❑ Application Migration: Transferring SAP applications from the existing system to a new system or platform, especially during upgrade to a new SAP version or migration projects to cloud-based services.
❑ Platform Migration: Transferring SAP systems from the existing hardware or software platforms to a different platform. This may include, for example, operating system, database or server changes.
❑ Database Migration: Transferring or upgrading SAP system from the existing database to another database. For example, SAP HANA database migration.
Migration processes may be required to ensure that SAP systems operate up to date and reliably and/or to adapt to new technologies. Migration projects can be very complex and they require good planning. Additionally, they should generally be carried out by expert consultants to protect data integrity and ensure uninterrupted business continuity.
